SENATOR BRUNO SECURES LOCAL AID FOR MECHANICVILLE, SARATOGA SPRINGS

Mechanicville and Saratoga Springs will receive additional assistance to further ease the burden of local property taxes and assist them in meeting the needs of their residents, announced Senator Joe Bruno on Sunday.

The two cities will receive increases of nearly 10 percent in AIM (Aid and Incentives to Municipalities) funding this year (2008-2009 budget year) after Senator Bruno rejected an earlier executive proposal calling for cuts that would have placed undue pressure and further economic stress on local taxpayers.

"Providing additional aid to cities is a priority in this budget," said Senator Bruno. "While the Executive Budget proposed a two percent cut in aid to cities, we recognized how critically important this aid is to help cities meet the needs of their communities without resorting to higher property taxes."

Under the new agreement, Mechanicville will get a boost of more than $60,000 (an increase of 9.5 percent) that will total nearly $700,000 in available funds that will assist city leaders in this difficult economic climate.

Mechanicville Mayor Anthony Sylvester welcomed the announcement.

"Senator Bruno has been a great supporter of Mechanicville," said Mayor Sylvester. "We feel like an adopted child. He thinks and cares about his people, and we greatly appreciate his support."

Saratoga Springs will receive an increase this year of more than $50,000 for a total AIM award of nearly $1.2 million.

The increase was part of the public protection and general government budget bills (S.6800-D, S.6806-C) that were passed by the Senate.
