SENATOR BRUNO ANNOUNCES $42 MILLION FOR THE INSTITUTE FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
Senator Joseph L. Bruno today announced $42 million in capital funding from the 2008-09 State Budget to construct a new state-of-the art biomedical facility at the University at Albany’s East Campus to house the Institute for Biomedical Education and Research. The Institute is an historic collaboration between the University at Albany and Albany Medical Center designed to promote and accelerate the advancement of biomedical education and research and strengthen the Capital Region’s biotech industry. Senator Bruno also announced a $25 million multi-year commitment to support a new 60-bed, state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), part of a $360 million expansion announced earlier this year by Albany Medical Center. "The key to a vibrant economy is strong collaboration between government, higher education, and private industry," said Senator Bruno. "Today’s announcement will keep the Capital Region at the forefront of cutting edge research and education. This Institute will revolutionize health care, biomedical research, and medical education in Upstate New York. Albany Medical Center and the University at Albany are the largest educational and research institutions and the Capital Region and have accomplished so much, and contributed greatly to the entire area -- this collaboration will allow them to achieve even more." "For the duration of his career in public service, Senator Bruno has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people in New York State and the Captial Region through investment in education and technology," said Governor David A. Paterson. "Those efforts have helped to make the University of Albany a leader on both fronts, and the Institute for Biomedical Education and Research will allow UAlbany to maintain that leadership position for decades to come." "Today's announcements are further examples of Senator Bruno's career-long commitment to improving the health of people throughout our region as consistently demonstrated through support of the education, research and health care missions of Albany Medical Center," said James J. Barba, president and CEO of Albany Medical Center. "We share his vision for establishing state-of-the-art biomedical research and education facilities and a collaborative approach to attracting renowned faculty and a talented and diverse student population, and thank him on behalf of the countless babies and families who will benefit from our new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit." "The University at Albany welcomes the opportunity to work with Albany Medical Center," said University at Albany Interim President George M. Philip. "This collaboration will build upon key strengths of each institution, such as cancer, cardiological and neurological research, as well as prevention medicine. The alliance will set the stage for the development of new collaborations with other medical and educational institutions throughout New York." The 110,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility will house research space and academic/instructional space that will be used to: > enhance the education of medical students by expanding the preventive medicine and public health curriculum; > provide greater educational access for students from both institutions through dual degree programs, including BS-MD, MD-MPH, and MD-PhD programs; > create research collaboration in the focused areas of cancer, cardiology, and neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s Disease; and > increase the size of the research clusters, resulting in greater competitiveness, economic development opportunities for the region, and greater access to federal research dollars. The historic partnership between Albany Medical Center and the University at Albany will give them the opportunity to advance the National Institute’s of Health (NIH) Roadmap for Medical Research, aimed at increasing scientific discovery and knowledge through inter-institutional research programs. The Institute for Biomedical Education and Research will play a critical role in revolutionizing health care, biomedical research, and medical education in Upstate New York. It will address the need for a qualified, well-educated workforce to meet rising health care needs due to the State’s aging population and the growth of the population. At the same time, the collaboration will increase scientific productivity, create more research opportunities, and enhance the biotech industry throughout the region, attracting more federal funding and bringing and retaining the best and brightest medical and research professionals in the world. The funding announced today for the new NICU at Albany Medical Center will provide for 60 fully equipped private rooms to accommodate the technology and staff needed to care for sick, high-risk babies. The project will also include a new inpatient operating suite with 20 state-of-the-art operating rooms. The NICU will receive $5 million this year, and $5 million each of the next four years. Currently, Albany Medical Center has the only Level IV NICU in the region. The NICU provided critically important care to 802 babies from counties throughout Upstate New York in 2007. The University at Albany-SUNY has a broad mission of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, life-enhancing research and scholarship, and a commitment to public service. A University at Albany education brings the world within reach to students through nine schools and colleges, and an honors college. A student body of more than 17,000 students has a global connection to more than 140,000 alumni. ####
