New York State Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and Scholastic, Inc. today announced that Scholastic will donate $3,000 in books on behalf of Senator Bruno to six elementary schools in Troy in commemoration of National Library Week.
"There is nothing more important for the development of elementary school students than to cultivate a love of reading," said Senator Bruno. "I am so grateful to Scholastic for their generous donation on my behalf. Six schools in Troy will receive $500 in new books, which will have the potential to open new worlds to many of these children."
"Public libraries and access to quality books can give children from all walks of life the opportunity to become better readers and successful students," said Greg Worrell, President of Scholastic Library Publishing. "Scholastic is pleased to mark Senator Bruno's celebration of National Library Week with a book donation in his name to help enrich the lives of Troy's young learners."
"As we celebrate National Library Week, we need to recognize the role that all libraries play in providing life-long learning to all members of our society, both young and old. School libraries especially play a key role in instilling a love of reading in young children that will have a positive impact over a life-time," said Michael J. Borges, Executive Director of the New York Library Association. "We are grateful for Senator Brunos support for libraries and the important role they play in assisting people of all ages in the pursuit of life-long learning."
The New York State Senate passed a resolution commemorating National Library Week (April 10-16th). A ceremony was held today in the school library of Carroll Hill Elementary School in Troy to celebrate Scholastic's donation in Senator Bruno's name.
