Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that he will secure $12 million in State money to help fund the rehabilitation and expansion of the Saratoga City Center.
In a speech to the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, Senator Bruno said: "Saratoga is one of the fastest growing counties in the State, and the City of Saratoga Springs is attracting more visitors than ever. The expansion of the City Center will help Saratoga become an attractive year-round site for larger conventions, conferences and trade shows. This increased activity will create new jobs and generate more revenue for shops, restaurants, hotels other local businesses, as well as for the local and State governments."
Senator Bruno said he is committing $6 million for the project this year out of the 2006-07 State budget, and will secure an additional $6 million as needed, to enable the project to be completed next year.
"The proposed project would expand the footprint of the current facility, enhance the systems and technology within the structure and prepare the City Center to serve convention groups and the Saratoga community," Michael Toohey, Chairman of the City Center Authority said. "We appreciate everything Senator Bruno has done to support Saratoga and for his support of this important project that will help make the city a magnet for conventions and visitors throughout the year."
The Saratoga City Center was built in 1984. The project, which is projected to cost more than $17 million and take 14 to 16 months to complete, will expand the facility from 52,500 square feet to 80,130 square feet.
The expansion will enable the City Center to increase exhibit space, host a variety of different activities for the same convention at the same time and host multiple events on the same day.
"With this investment we can make Saratoga not just the summer place to be, but the winter, fall and spring place to be as well," Senator Bruno said. "Its a critically important project for the entire Capital Region."
