Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Thomas J. Madison Jr. today announced the ceremonial designation of Interstate 90 within the limits of Rensselaer County as the Rensselaer County Veterans Memorial Highway. A sign noting the designation was unveiled at a ceremony today at the Schodack Rest Area on Interstate 90 in the Town of Schodack.
"As the nation prepares this upcoming weekend to commemorate the sacrifices of the men and woman who died in military service to our country, this designation will serve as a permanent reminder of their brave action," said Senator Bruno. "It is important that we continue to recognize the efforts of our veterans who have made selfless acts of courage to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today."
Legislation designating the 16.12 mile portion of Interstate 90 from the Albany/ Rensselaer County line to the Exit B-1 toll barrier of the New York State Thruway was introduced and passed by the Legislature in 2005. The designation is ceremonial in nature only and the road will continue to be officially know as Interstate 90.
"The men and woman who have fought for our freedom in the United States Armed Forces deserve our respect and recognition," Commissioner Madison said. "This ceremonial designation will remind the millions who travel Interstate 90 each year of the many sacrifices Rensselaer County residents have made for their country."
The ceremony was also attended by Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino and Rensselaer County Veterans Administrator Bob Reiter.
Rensselaer County is home to more than 13,000 veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The ceremonial designation honors those county residents, both living and deceased, who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Marine Corps.
NYSDOT has installed two signs noting the ceremonial designation. They are located on Interstate 90 eastbound between Exits 7 and 8, and westbound between Exit 12 and the Schodack Rest Area.
