The 2007 legislative session that began with promise and achievement, ended with a whimper. The blame for that lies squarely on the Governors shoulders due to the fact that he still hasnt figured out how to govern.
As Attorney General, this Governor had a successful record because he had the power to subpoena and threaten. He is finding out that he doesnt have those powers as a Chief Executive.
Governor Spitzer is consumed by one issue and one issue alone -- his own Millionaire Reelection Plan, a plan that would allow only the wealthiest New Yorkers to run for office, and, quite possibly, ensure his own reelection. He shouldnt be forcing this plan down the throats of New Yorkers.
The Governor has given us nominees who are reportedly under investigation, have held fundraisers for him in recent weeks, or in the case of his Upstate Economic Development czar, a nominee who lives more than 300 miles from his office. Meanwhile, the Governor refers to desperately-needed upstate economic development projects as dripping with fat even as he proposed the largest ever member item in State history.
Its unfortunate that the Governor continues to bully and threaten in an attempt to get his way. That will not work. As I have said time and time again, instead of focusing on what New Yorkers truly care about -- lower property taxes, more jobs and safer communities -- he continues his singular pursuit of an issue that no one cares about.
In the days ahead, the 32 other members of the Senate Majority Conference will join me in reminding all New Yorkers that the Governors priorities are wrong, misplaced and self-serving.
