ADDITIONAL STATE AID FOR RENSSELAER & SARATOGA COUNTY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
The 2006-07 State budget that was recently approved by the Legislature included funding increases in state aid for cities, towns, and villages in Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties to help ease the pressure of local property taxes while maintaining important services. The Governor has announced that he agrees with the Legislatures suggested increases and will not veto these items in the budget. Localities in Rensselaer County can expect an additional $2,519,416 in state aid while cities, towns and villages in Saratoga County will receive a total increase in aid of $503,865. This budget will also include $25 million in incentive aid for communities that share local services to increase efficiency and reduce local government expenses for property taxpayers. Property tax relief has been a top priority for my colleagues and I in the Senate Majority during this legislative session and we believe that significant additional property tax relief will be agreed to when the budget process is completed. This increase in State assistance to local governments will ease the tremendous burden on hardworking property taxpayers. It is critically important to help the cities, towns, and villages of Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties meet their needs without resorting to higher property taxes. The cities of Rensselaer, Troy and Mechanicville will each receive an aid increase of more than 24 percent, while the city of Saratoga Springs will receive an increase of more than 16 percent. All villages and towns will receive an increase of 20 percent. The breakdown in the increase in aid for Rensselaer County is as follows, including each locality's total aid, followed by the increase in aid from 2005-06 to 2006-07 in parentheses: > Cities: Rensselaer - $1,092,186 ($212,181); Troy - $11,291,806 ($2,193,677) > Towns: Berlin - $9,425 ($1,568); Brunswick - $80,051 ($13,322); East Greenbush - $75,124 ($12,502) Grafton - $8,441 ($1,405); Hoosick - $51,520 ($8,574); Nassau - $28,489 ($4,741); North Greenbush - $107,029 ($17,812); Petersburg - $7,819 ($1,301); Pittstown - $32,098 ($5,342); Poestenkill - $38,063 ($6,334); Sand Lake - $36,707 ($6,108); Schaghticoke - $44,594 ($7,421); Schodack - $71,444 ($11,890); Stephentown - $12,293 ($2,046) > Villages: Castleton-on-Hudson - $13,740 ($2,286); East Nassau - $9,371 ($1,560); Hoosick Falls - $30,122 ($5,013); Nassau - $10,390 ($1,729); Schaghticoke - $7,630 ($1,270); Valley Falls - $7,998 ($1,331) The breakdown in the increase in aid for Saratoga County is as follows, including each locality's total aid, followed by the increase in aid from 2005-06 to 2006-07 in parentheses: > Cities: Mechanicville - $606,545 ($117,834); Saratoga Springs - $1,688,826 ($237,462) > Towns: Ballston - $50,385 ($8,385); Charlton - $33,470 ($5,570); Clifton Park - $100,414 ($16,711); Corinth - $22,584 ($3,759); Day - $28,559 ($4,753); Edinburg - $5,080 ($846); Galway - $20,622 ($3,432); Greenfield - $23,866 ($3,972); Hadley - $6,773 ($1,127); Halfmoon - $67,196 ($11,182); Malta - $26,235 ($4,366); Milton - $108,565 ($18,067); Moreau - $46,302 ($7,705); Northumberland - $15,201 ($2,530); Providence - $6,058 ($1,008); Saratoga - $32,094 ($5,341); Stillwater - $31,640 ($5,265); Waterford - $42,147 ($7,014); Wilton - $26,151 ($4,352) > Villages: Ballston Spa - $41,301 ($6,873); Corinth - $22,276 ($3,707); Galway - $3,189 ($542); Round Lake - $6,177 ($1,028); Schuylerville - $11,014 ($1,883); South Glens Falls - $31,532 ($5,247); Stillwater - $10,369 ($1,726); Victory - $6,625 ($1,102); Waterford - $66,849 ($11,125). I am pleased that this budget will provide the necessary aid to local governments throughout Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties and will help reduce the costly burdens passed on to taxpayers.
