Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that he has secured $10,000 in the 2004-2005 State budget for improvement and expansion of the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market. The funds will be used to create a permanent office space as well as to enrich community outreach and increase programming for each of the 52 markets held each year.
"Senator Bruno's tremendous support of the Troy Waterfront Farmers' Market has allowed us to grow into a year-round local food festival with over seventy vendor members bringing everything from natural meats and poultry, to farmstead cheese, unique produce, artisan baked goods, and much more," said Matt Lindstrom, co-founder and current TWFM board member.
"The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is a terrific example of how our community has been widely recognized for its high quality agricultural market," said Senator Bruno. "I am delighted to support our local vendors who have made the city of Troy and Rensselaer County thrive as an award-winning economic success. By expanding and improving many of the behind-the-scenes details, this market will continue to grow and generate prosperity in the Capital Region."
As the market has grown rapidly, larger goals and operational needs have surfaced. The funds secured will enable the market to conduct a study for site-improvement, search for a permanent office space, enhance outreach strategies through more informational newsletters, web site and market table, and to research the possibility of creating an additional farmers market at a different location.
The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market has been awarded "Best Farmers Market" in Metrolands "BEST OF the Capital Region" issue for four consecutive years. The market was also titled the best "food festival" in the entire Hudson Valley area by Hudson Valley magazine in 2003 and was selected for a national study measuring the economic impact of farmers markets on their local economies conducted by the Ford Foundation and Project for Public Spaces.
The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is a not-for-profit organization located along the Hudson River near downtown Troy and is open from mid-May through November. During the winter months, the market moves indoors to the Uncle Sams Atrium Building in downtown Troy.
