Over 7,500 Pounds of Donated Goods Collected for Our Troops in Iraq
Monday, February 14, 2005
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and Senator George H. Winner Jr. today announced that 7,500 pounds of donated goods will be sent from the headquarters of the 42nd Infantry Division of the New York Army National Guard in Troy to the men and women in the armed forces serving in Iraq. The donations were collected from residents of western New York, including Senator Winners district in Elmira.
"The sacrifices our soldiers make are heroic," said Senator Bruno. "They leave their homes, families, friends, and their everyday lives to ensure that we can live in a safe and united nation. Their patriotism is a reflection of our nations history and I am proud to live in a state that gives back so generously to the brave men and women who protect us and defend our freedom."
"People from all walks of life -- parents and their children, seniors, bikers, veterans, you name it -- have responded in an amazing way," said Senator Winner. "Im proud of their generosity, and Im very grateful for the efforts of the Family Readiness Groups in Troy to ensure that our donations reach our troops. Its a small gesture on our part, but we hope that it brings the troops a touch of home and lets them know what theyre on our minds."
The donations range from personal hygiene products and first aid to writing supplies and food. Local volunteers from the Family Readiness Group in Troy will put together care packages for the soldiers serving overseas.
