Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that he has secured $15,000 from the 2004-05 state budget for the purchase and renovation of the Hill Street Community Garden in the city of Troy.
"Our Hill Street Community Garden has been a valuable community resource for the past 15 years," said Amy Klein, Executive Director of Capital District Community Gardens. "We are thrilled to be able to purchase this land and make lasting improvements to the garden which will benefit generations to come. None of this would be possible without the continued support of Senator Bruno."
"Capital District Community Gardens, through various community gardening and urban greening programs, has helped to establish a new sense of civic pride in neighborhoods throughout the Capital Region," said Senator Bruno. "The Hill Street Garden is a tremendous asset for Troy and is a great example of the importance of preserving and protecting our precious natural resources."
The Hill Street Community Garden is a 20,600 square foot parcel that has accommodated 15 city residents who are actively growing food for their families. The grant money will help our organization acquire the land and construct new fencing to keep wildlife from the adjoining Prospect Park out of the garden.
Capital District Community Gardens is a regional not-for-profit community service organization that has been helping local residents improve their neighborhoods through community gardening and urban greening programs for 30 years. Our organization is dedicated to growing stronger communities through horticultural projects in urban neighborhoods and currently manages 43 cooperative neighborhood gardens in Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties, where more than 600 local residents grow food for their families.
