Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today spoke to over 200 students at the Tamarac Middle School in Brunswick about staying fit and the importance of incorporating healthy choices into their everyday lifestyles. Senator Bruno led a walk with the students around the track to encourage them to begin a health and fitness routine.
Tamarac Middle School is one of the more than 5,000 schools in the nation to test the Coca-Cola Company's "Live It!" fitness program. Over 1.2 million students are expected to take part during the 2005-2006 school year.
"This program is a fun way for students to learn about healthy choices for eating and exercise," Senator Bruno said. "It is a good lesson in how the decisions you make in your youth will affect your future. It's as simple as getting outside to walk, run, ride and play and eating something healthy instead of junk."
"Live It!" teaches students to make health a priority. Each student will be given a stepometer, an activity guide to log their steps and tips to eat healthfully within the new dietary guidelines.
"We are really looking forward to working with Tamarac Middle School. "Live It!" teaches students to lead healthy, active lifestyles while striving for the goal of a healthier United States," said Harriet Tolve, Coca-Cola Enterprises.
