League Ruling Clears Final Hurdle for Pro Ball's Return
Thursday, July 27, 2000
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and Hudson Valley Community College President John L. Buono today hailed twin rulings by professional baseball officials that cleared all hurdles to the return of baseball to the Capital Region.
Senator Bruno and President Buono were informed of the decision by William Gladstone, who plans to relocate his Class A professional team to a new, state-of-the-art stadium to be built with state funds at the college. Funding for the project was secured by Senator Bruno.
"With today's announcement by the National Association of Professional Baseball, we can truly say that pro baseball is back in the Capital Region," said Senator Bruno (R-C, Brunswick). "Our new professional baseball team and the new stadium here at Hudson Valley promise to be a Grand Slam for the Capital Region."
"The return of professional baseball and the construction of our new baseball stadium complex will provide not just entertainment and recreation for our region, but also create new academic opportunities for Hudson Valley Community College," said President Buono. "I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Bruno, Bill Gladstone and our new team to develop exciting new learning opportunities for our students."
"The new stadium and team will provide quality family entertainment, as well as hundreds of jobs for area residents, and will serve as a new stimulus for continued economic growth for our region," Senator Bruno said.
The rulings by NAPB President Mike Moore cleared away all remaining objections to locating the Class A division team at the new Troy stadium.
The Capital Region has lacked a professional league team since 1995, when the Class AA Yankees left the area.
