BRUNO ANNOUNCES 10 WATER PROJECTS ELIGIBLE FOR BOND FUNDS

Tuesday, September 26, 2000

Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that ten projects in Rensselaer and Saratoga counties are eligible to receive funding from the 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act, as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding approved by the Governor and Legislative leaders and released today.

"The 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air continues to pay big dividends for New Yorkers by providing funds for important local projects to improve the quality and quantity of drinking water available for our local communities," Senator Bruno said. "I'm very pleased that many communities in the Capital Region have detailed, priority projects to improve their water systems and will be eligible for funding."

"These grants and low interest loans will provide millions of dollars to pay for major projects to increase the supply of clean drinking water by finding new water sources, building new treatment plants and distribution systems," Senator Bruno said.

The following local projects are eligible for bond act funds:

RENSSELAER COUNTY
> Babcock Lake (Town of Grafton) water system-- $608,957 to build a new water treatment plant and upgrade the distribution system.

> Hoosick Falls -- $3,423,900 to upgrade the water treatment plant, for a new ground water source and to upgrade the distribution system.

> North Greenbush -- $4,60,830 for water district #1 to extend the distribution system and for system consolidation.

> City of Rensselaer -- $3,643,120 to upgrade storage and $1,391,030 to upgrade the pump station.

> City of Troy -- $3,390,000 to upgrade the water treatment plant and upgrade storage.

SARATOGA COUNTY
> Ballston -- $846,779 to extend the distribution system of water district #2.

> Halfmoon -- $1,644,000 to extend the distribution system.

> Mechanicville -- $4,779,900 for a new water treatment plant.

> Round Lake -- $495,000 for a new surface water treatment facility.

> Schuylerville-Victory -- $2,159,792 for a new water treatment plant, to upgrade the distribution system and for a new ground water source.

All the projects on the list received high scores after being reviewed by the state Environmental Facilities Corporation and the Department of Health and are eligible for either grants or low interest loans from the bond act, provided work is ready to begin between October 1, 2000 and September 30, 2001.

The statewide list released today includes 196 projects that are eligible to receive more than $575 million in bond act funds. About $183 million is targeted for grants and no interest loans to hard pressed communities, the remainder of the funds will go towards low interest loans to local governments.

"The Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act continues to serve as a landmark program to help our communities address environmental concerns and ensure that clean drinking water is available for everyone," Senator Bruno said.
