"Healthy Women Partnership" to Benefit 60,000 Uninsured, Low-income Women

Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced $2 million in new state Senate funding to help promote early detection of breast and cervical cancers across New York State.
The funding will help bolster the state's proven Healthy Women Partnerships, joint efforts by county and state health officials, hospitals and local service agencies that are expected to serve more than 60,000 low income women and those with no or inadequate health insurance receive free screenings for the diseases.
Combined with funding included in Governor George Pataki's budget, the Senate grant will bring total state and federal support for locally provided services to $11 million this year under the Partnership program.
"The Healthy Women's Partnership is an effective way to ensure that thousands of uninsured and low-income women receive the early detection services they need to find and stop breast and cervical cancer," said Senator Bruno (R-C, Brunswick).
"Fighting breast and cervical cancer and helping New York women get the treatment they need for these diseases will remain a top priority of the Senate," Senator Bruno said.
Healthy Women Partnership grants range from $29,824 to provide services to 300 women through the Orleans County Health Department, to $1.68 million to serve 10,300 women in Manhattan.
Capital Region counties of Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga will receive a total of $235,600 to provide services or more than 1200 uninsured or low-income women.
The Healthy Women Partnerships provide breast and cervical screening services at no charge for women 40 and older who lack health insurance or meet income eligibility guidelines. There is no charge for the health services provided.
The partnerships also help women diagnosed with cancer receive help to reduce treatment costs where possible.
