Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that he has obtained $750,000 in state funds to help the New York State Theatre Institute (NYSTI) establish a new home at 37 First Street in Troy. The building is NYSTI's first home since the organization was founded in 1974.
"The New York State Theatre Institute is a cultural gem in the Capital Region," Senator Bruno said. "Development of the arts, including NYSTI and the new Arts Center, is vital for the revitalization of downtown Troy. I'm proud to have been able to secure state support for NYSTI to purchase the new home that they are dedicating today."
"We are delighted to finally have a permanent home of our own after 25 years," Patricia Snyder, Producing Artistic Director of the Institute said. "Thanks to the vision and leadership of Senator Bruno, the New York State theatre Institute is celebrating its 'Miracle at 37 First street.'"
NYSTI, which has received many national awards for its productions, is currently rehearsing for its upcoming production of the classic Christmas story "Miracle on 34th Street." Members of the cast attended today's dedication.
The funds announced today come from the 2000-2001 state budget and have been set aside for waterfront revitalization projects. $350,00 is being used by NYSTI for the purchase of the administrative and education building that is being dedicated today, the remainder of the grant will be used to purchase another building for the construction of scenery.
Senator Bruno has always been a strong supporter of the Institute, having secured $350,000 in 1998 to renovate the Schacht Fine arts Center at Russell Sage College where NYSTI stages its performances. He also obtained $200,000 this year for general support the Institute's program.
