Funding Will Help Localities Recover From Spring and Summer Storms
Wednesday, December 27, 2000
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that communities in Rensselaer County will receive over $1.5 million in state and federal aid to help them recover from the severe storms that struck the region during the spring and summer months. The aid is part of a statewide $12.7 million package announced by Governor George E. Pataki.
"Residents and community leaders throughout Rensselaer County have done a remarkable job recuperating from these storms and this aid will be of great help in their continuing recovery efforts," said Senator Bruno. "I applaud the Governor for helping to secure funding that will help communities throughout New York State recover from these devastating storms."
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a major disaster declaration for the period of May 3 through August 12. The agency issued the declaration after determining that the strong storms were part of a continuing weather pattern which caused significant damage from debris, wind and water to local roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Federal and State public assistance funding will provide local governments with 87.5 percent reimbursement of the eligible costs of debris removal and emergency protective measures taken in response to the storms. Reimbursement will also be provided to address the cost of repairing damaged infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, public buildings, public utilities and public recreational facilities.
Payments were made to Rensselaer County and the following localities and entities affected by the spring and summer storms:
Rensselaer County, $254,399.77; Village of Castleton-on-Hudson, $53,758.68; Town of Grafton, $118,943.91; Town of Petersburg, $220,695.21; Town of Stephentown, $301,560.97; Best Lutheran Fire Department, $1,743.61; Town of East Greenbush, $273,952.92; Town of Berlin, $18,267.19; Town of Schodack, $23,691.08; Town of Brunswick, $84,339.63; Village of Nassau, $17,460.12; Town of Nassau, $101,389.76; Town of Hoosick, $19,107.90; Town of North Greenbush, $36,607.49; Village of Hoosick Falls, $3,161.94; Town of Pittstown, $42,927.60; East Greenbush Fire District, $3,435.87.
