The New York State Senate today passed a resolution congratulating Edward Cardinal Egan on his recent elevation to the position of Cardinal. Cardinal Egan, the Archbishop of New York, was in Albany attending the New York State Catholic Conference for its annual public policy forum. While at the Capitol, the Cardinal met with Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and also offered the invocation for the Senate session.
"It is the sense of this Legislative Body," the Senate Resolution reads, "that when individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, it is appropriate to commend them for their many benevolent deeds as they enter a new and challenging experience."
Cardinal Egan was one of 37 individuals named Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on February 21 in Vatican City. He was named Archbishop of New York on May 11, 2000, succeeding John Cardinal O'Connor. Also honored in the Senate Resolution were Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, the Archbishop of Washington D.C., who formerly served as Auxiliary Bishop of New York, and Avery Cardinal Dulles, the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University in the Bronx.
