Grants to benefit Capital Region Companies

Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno (R-C, Brunswick) said that members of the Software Network Association, which includes several high tech firms in the Capital Region, will benefit from a $1.1 million state job training grant announced today by Governor Pataki.
"These grants will allow employees at local companies to take advantage of high tech job training and keep apprised of the latest techniques and advances," Senator Bruno said. "Not only will this help their companies become more prosperous, it will help keep the entire state at the forefront of the technological revolution."
Last year, Senator Bruno secured $150,000 in state funds to help create the New York State Software Network Association, a consortium of New York State regional software associations that represent more than 10,000 high-tech companies which specialize in software development, support and programming. They employ a total of more than 120,000 people throughout the state.
"The software industry in New York State is a $24 billion a year business and we hope it will grow even stronger," Senator Bruno said. "This type of investment in job training will help accomplish that goal.
"Across the country, many businesses are concerned with the availability of skilled workers for their technology-related jobs," Senator Bruno said. "Schools, colleges and universities are finding it difficult to keep up with the demand for computer programmers, web designers, data converters and other high-tech skills necessary for today's progressive companies. Likewise, companies want to ensure that their current workers are capable of keeping up with leading-edge information technologies and innovations."
Members of the Software Network Association include the Tech Valley Software Alliance, that includes New Century Computing, MapInfo, Commerce Hub, Flow Management Technologies, SynQuest, Pinnacle Technology, Documentation Strategies, I-Centrix and Logic Technology, among others. The grants announced today will enable employees of these firms to take advantage of high-tech job training offered at state and city universities, including Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
