SENATOR BRUNO IN WASHINGTON TO HELP SECURE AID FOR NEW YORK

Senator Bruno has been working with Governor Pataki to help New York recover from the terrorist attacks.

Government, Labor, and Business Leaders Form United New York Coalition

Thursday, November 1, 2001

Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today led a coalition of New York State government, labor, and business leaders to Washington, DC, in the first organized effort to secure the federal funding necessary to help New York States recovery and revitalization efforts in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The goals of the "United New York" coalition are to keep jobs and investment in New York State; to keep businesses and residents committed to the city; and to rebuild lower Manhattan.

"We all know the physical and economic devastation that was caused by the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center," said Senator Bruno. "Today we are reaffirming our solidarity as we fight for the one of the most important causes we have ever been involved with -- the rebuilding of lower Manhattan and the revitalization of New Yorks economy."

Members of the United New York Coalition traveling to Washington expect to visit with Congressman John Sweeney and other members of the NYS congressional delegation, as well as other government leaders. The members of the coalition include:

Government: Senator Bruno, NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, US Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton, and senior members of Governor George Patakis staff.

Labor: NYS AFL-CIO President, Denis Hughes; NYC Central Labor Council President, Brian McLaughlin; United Federation of Teachers President, Randi Weingarten; District Council 37 Administrator, Lee Saunders; and Building and Construction Trades Council President, Ed Malloy.

Business: New York City Partnership represented by a number of business leaders including Robert Catell, CEO of Keyspan; Jerry Speyer, CEO of Tishman Speyer, and David Rockefeller, founder of the New York City Partnership; the Real Estate Board represented by Steven Spinola, Executive Director; the Association for a Better New York represented by William Rudin; and the Downtown Alliance represented by Carl Weisbrod.

During the visit, Senator Bruno offered his thanks to the New York delegation for their continued support of the New York aid package while he urged Congressional leaders to support both the $20 billion aid package and an additional $5 billion business stimulus package to help keep jobs and businesses in Manhattan.

"We are talking about rebuilding the financial capital of the world," Senator Bruno added. "Our job today is to help people understand the importance of the recovery efforts in New York -- people who have not been to Ground Zero, who have not attended funerals, who have not met survivors who have lost their business and their jobs."
