Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that Senator Pedro Espada will join the Senate Majority Conference as the Senator from the 32nd Senate District.
"The Senate Republican Majority, partnering with Governor Pataki, has broadened its base to the point that we are all inclusive," Senator Bruno said. "I am pleased to announce that we are adding the first Latino in the history of this State to join the Republican Conference. Senator Espada, who represents the South Bronx, will be a valuable addition to our Conference and all of us look forward to working with him."
Senator Espada, who changed his party enrollment at the announcement, said he looks forward to joining the Senate Majority and working with Senator Bruno and the Majority Conference on issues important to his constituents.
"Thanks to Senator Brunos graceful, courageous and visionary leadership, an historic embrace is indeed taking place between a poor and working-class Latino/African American community in the Bronx and the majority party in the upper house of arguably one of the most important state legislative bodies in America," Senator Espada said. "Several months ago, the people of my District helped to elect a Republican mayor -- Mike Bloomberg of New York City -- and are poised to help re-elect a good man and a great Governor, George Pataki."
"The citizens of my district have signaled that they no longer want to be taken for granted," Senator Espada said. "They want not only to talk about diversity, they want to diversify."
Senator Espada has represented the South Bronx for 25 years and has focused much of his legislative and public policy agenda on educational reform, housing, health, and economic development.
