Three of the Capital Regions most outstanding high school students received scholarship awards at the New York State Society of Engineers Capital Region Engineers Week Celebration. Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno was the keynote speaker at the event which will help raise public awareness of the important work performed by New Yorks engineers.
"Engineers have always been innovative problem solvers and inventors-- people whose contributions help make our lives safer, more productive and more enjoyable", said Senator Bruno. "They also played a crucial role in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and their role in investigating the disaster will help make future buildings and projects in New York even safer."
The scholarship awards, based on academic achievement, were presented to three Capital Region students who plan majoring in engineering in college. Alok Tayti of Niskayuna was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, while Brandon Costelloe-Kuehn from Columbia High in East Greenbush and Melrose resident Daniel McCabe from LaSalle Institute each received a $500 scholarship.
Also recognized at the event were the winners of the Capital City Region Future Cities Competition from Averill Park. John Svatek and his students from Algonquin Middle School recently returned from the National Engineers Week Future Cities Competition in Washington, D.C. where they displayed their model city of "Staugaitis."
"These gifted students have demonstrated the inventiveness and ingenuity that characterize the best engineers," said Senator Bruno. "When we consider the extent to which New Yorks economy and public safety is dependent on the work of engineers, it is certainly heartening to know that our future is in the good and capable hands of a future generation of engineers."
