Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno last night received the John E. Deitrick Award from the Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMS). The award is given by AMS to elected officials who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in medical, research, and education related issues. Jim Barba, the CEO of Albany Medical Center, nominated Senator Bruno for the award.
Presenting the award to Senator Bruno, Dr. Eugene Feigelson, Dean of NYS Downstate College of Medicine and President of AMS, cited the Senators initiatives in enhancing New Yorks competitiveness in biotechnology and biomedical research. He also praised the Gen*NY*sis program, sponsored by Senator Bruno, that promotes biotechnology and provides funding to assist medical schools and other research institutions to recruit young researchers.
"I am very honored to receive the John E. Deitrick Award from such a thriving association that works toward continuing the strength of medical education, medical care and research in New York," said Senator Bruno. "Economic development is a high priority for the Senate Majority. Our medical facilities, combined with the Ge*NY*sis initiative, will make New York, and the Capital Region, a leader in biosciences and help create thousands of new jobs."
The Associated Medical Schools of New York, based in New York City, is a statewide consortium of the 14 New York medical schools.
