Senator Bruno today attended the 2002 Police Officers Remembrance Ceremony to add the names of 60 officers who died in the World Trade Center attacks to the New York State Police Officers Memorial at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.
"September 11th will always be a day on which we mourn the loss of these sixty police officers," said Senator Bruno. "But it will also be a day when we recognize the heroism of these courageous men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of others. The officers who go on, are a real, living memorial to those we lost. These men and women continue to serve with the honor and courage exemplified by those who sacrificed their lives for the protection of thousands."
The one historical addition to the Memorial this year was Sergeant Michael Brophy of the Utica Police Department. Sergeant Brophy was killed in December, 1918 as a result of injuries incurred while directing traffic.
In 1989, New York State enacted legislation providing for the construction of a monument to honor and remember New York police officers slain in the line of duty. Including this year's additions, 1,070 names from 124 departments around the state have been engraved in the memorial's walls since its dedication in 1991.
"The police officers who laid down their lives on September 11th are forever in our debt and in our hearts," said Senator Bruno. "It is my hope that this Memorial will continue to inspire future generations of New Yorkers and continue to remind us of all that these men and women did for our state and our nation."
