Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today met with Bernie Kerik upon his confirmation as New York State Athletic Commissioner. Mr. Kerik recently retired as the 40th Police Commissioner of the City of New York.
"Since the Athletic Commission oversees boxing, sometimes the Commission has to police tough guys," said Senator Bruno. "I cant think of anyone better for this job than a former police commissioner. I know Bernie will do a great job and I wish him the best of luck."
Bernie Keriks 16 month term as Police Commissioner was marked by dramatic reductions in crime, innovative and creative management and acting as a principal member of the Mayors cabinet overseeing the rescue, recovery and investigation of the World Trade Center attack on September 11. Kerik was responsible for 55,000 uniformed and civilian employees and a $3.2 billion annual budget.
His experience also includes serving as the Commissioner of the NYC Dept of Corrections and serving as Chief of Investigations and security supervisor for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
