State-of-the-art Equipment Will Save Lives
Wednesday, November 20, 2002
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today joined members of the Troy Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) to see three thermal imaging cameras that were purchased with a $60,000 state grant obtained by Senator Bruno.
Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to peer through smoke and steam to detect heat sources, such as humans who may be trapped inside a burning room or building. The handheld devices also protect firefighters by making victim searches in dark, burning and unstable buildings quicker and more efficient, exposing them to fewer risks, such as collapsing floors and walls.
"This state-of-the-art technology can save lives not just of fire victims, but also protect firefighters whose risky job often requires them to search throughout dangerously fire-damaged buildings to save lives," Senator Bruno said. "I am very pleased to be able to secure the resources to purchase these special cameras and make their jobs safer and enable them to save and protect lives in Troy."
"Thermal Imaging Units are the state-of-the-art technology for fire suppression and rescue in high heat and smoke environments," Gary M. Favro, President of the Troy UFA said. They allow firefighters to find victims, escape routes or where the fire is under the heaviest fire and smoke conditions. The units will dramatically increase our search and rescue capability and will be a tremendous safety tool to protect us. Senator Brunos support is greatly appreciated by our members because these units will save the lives of civilians and firefighters in our city."
