Wagers a Peppermint Pig against a Bushel of Webster Apples
Tuesday, November 26, 2002
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today made a friendly wager that the Shenendehowa Plainsmen would defeat the Webster Schroeder Warriors with State Senator Michael Nozzolio whose district includes the Rochester area school. The two teams meet this Sunday at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York to decide the Class AA State Football Championship.
"The Warriors have a great team, but Shenendehowa's stifling defense will shut down the Warrior's offense as they have done against teams all season long, including six shutouts during the regular season and two shutouts during the playoffs," said Senator Bruno. "I am looking forward to some good, clean football, and I am confident that when this game is over the Plainsmen will return to Clifton Park as State Champions."
"After a remarkable 48-7 win last Saturday over Vestal, the Webster Schroeder Football team is headed back to the Class AA State Football Championship, and I predict another victory for the team this year. Once again, the Webster Warriors will prove that they are the best team in New York State," said Senator Nozzolio.
If Shenendehowa wins, Senator Nozzolio will give Senator Bruno a bushel of Webster apples. In the event Webster Schroeder wins, Senator Bruno will present Senator Nozzolio with a Peppermint Pig, a Saratoga tradition dating back to the 1880's, from Saratoga Sweets in Clifton Park. The Peppermint Pig, cast of hard candy and broken with a hammer after Christmas dinner, is honored in Victorian holiday tradition as a symbol of good health, happiness and prosperity.
