Local Team Wins National Pop Warner Football Championship

State Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today honored the South Troy Trojan Warriors football team at a reception held in the State Capitol. The State Legislature also passed a resolution congratulating the players for their achievements in winning the 2002 National Pop Warner Midget Division II Football Championship held in Orlando, Florida.
"The South Troy Trojan Warriors exemplify what is meant by the word �team�," said Senator Bruno. "Their victory underscores the benefits of working together to achieve common goals. Our young athletes have made the entire community extremely proud of their accomplishments and I am pleased to join with parents, coaches, and team staff in calling them national champions."
Led by first-year coach Joe McNall and his excellent coaching staff, the South Troy Trojan Warriors enjoyed an undefeated season, compiling a record of 13-0. On December 12, 2002, the Warriors defeated the Mexicali Halcones from California by a score of 19-7 to capture the National Pop Warner Midget Division II Football Championship. Their triumph makes the Warriors the first team from New York State ever to win a National Pop Warner Football Championship.
