Weaver visits the State Capitol to Promote her upcoming 9-11 film
Monday, January 27, 2003
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today welcomed Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver, Director Jim Simpson, and film executives from Focus Features to Albany to meet with local uniformed Firefighters who participated in recovery efforts at ground zero. They also discussed Weavers new film, THE GUYS, that focuses on the heroic efforts of firefighters who responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the emotional impact of that devastating event.
The film chronicles a relationship between a fire Captain and a writer only days after the Captain lost most of his men in the World Trade Center attacks. Weaver and Simpson made their stop in Albany today as their first stop on a five-day, five-city tour to bring attention to THE GUYS.
"None of us will ever forget where we were or what we were doing when we heard the news of the World Trade Center attacks," said Bruno. "The importance of this film is critical in documenting the uncertain emotions that every New Yorker carried with them through the devastation."
"Id like to thank Sigourney and Jim for giving the people who see this film a new way of looking at firefighters -- as men and woman, as individuals who can be caring, warm and whole hearted while still doing their job," said Charlie Morello, President of the New York State Professional Firefighters Association, who attended the news conference.
"The Governor and Legislators did everything we could to help the families of 9/11 victims, from providing important information and assistance to providing comfort in a time of tremendous grief," Senator Bruno said. "We passed laws that cleared the way for special state and federal financial assistance and approved free tuition for the families of victims. We have held events to honor the heroes of that tragic day and we have the nations first permanent museum exhibition of artifacts documenting the September 11th attack at the World Trade Center that tells the inspiring story of how New Yorkers responded. And now Ms. Weaver and Mr. Simpson will tell that story on film."
In THE GUYS Ms. Weaver portrays a journalist called upon to help a fire Captain write eulogies for his men lost at the World Trade Center. The film is slated for release in the Albany area on March 28, 2003.
