U.S. and New York State Flags at Public Buildings Should be Lowered to Half Staff That Day
Friday, September 6, 2002
State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C- Schenectady) joins Governor George E. Pataki in asking that all United States and New York State flags at public buildings, such as schools and municipal buildings, be lowered to half staff at 8:46 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11th.
"Please lower the flags to half staff as a remembrance, and in honor of those who perished in the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks," Senator Farley said. "And we must not forget the brave souls aboard the flights that were hijacked for this horrific terrorist attack."
Senator Farley asks that flags remain at half staff for the remainder of the day and then return to full staff on Thursday, September 12th.
"I have several brochures available at my offices on how to properly fly the American flag year-round and on holidays. The flag must be treated with respect because it is the symbol of our great country. And treating our national symbol with great care and admiration is one way of showing respect for those who were lost on Sept. 11th," Senator Farley said. The brochures can be obtained by calling 455-2181 (Albany), 843-2188 (Amsterdam), and 762-3733 (Johnstown).
"As we approach the one-year anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on America, we reflect not only on this horrific tragedy, but also on the unprecedented outpouring of support, sacrifice and assistance to the rescue and recovery effort in Lower Manhattan from individual citizens, professionals and volunteer emergency workers from across the state. While all of these individuals were motivated by their own selfless concern for the safety of others and the well-being of our state and communities, their service to the people of this state certainly deserves recognition," Senator Farley said.
