Ongoing Revitalization Efforts Include Renovation of Proctor's Theatre
Wednesday, December 5, 2001
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno this week was joined by Governor Pataki in a tour of downtown Troy as they surveyed the ongoing improvement projects in the Collar City. The stroll through downtown included a stop at the historic Proctor's Theatre -- vacant since 1977 -- where plans are currently in place to renovate and preserve the 87 year old building.
"This proposal to renovate Proctor's Theatre is just one example of the continuing efforts to reclaim the rich history and spirit of Troy," said Senator Bruno. "Along with the residents of Troy, I have worked hard to bring more jobs back to the city to not only help improve the economic health of the city, but help bring some of these historic buildings back to life."
Over the last five years, Senator Bruno has successfully brought over 1,000 state jobs to Troy and has helped renovate a number of Troy's historic buildings into office space, including the Rice Building -- a renovation project that helped bring new high tech businesses to the city. Senator Bruno has helped bring in over $40 million in economic development for Troy, which includes funding for a new 4,500 seat stadium for minor league baseball at Hudson Valley Community College, scheduled to open in Spring 2002.
In addition, the Senator has also provided funding for important cultural and community projects, including $1.5 million for the renovation of the Hart-Cluett Mansion for the Rensselaer County Historical Society and over $2 million in support of a new Arts Center.
"With its rich history and active community, the City of Troy has two invaluable resources that will help ensure that these revitalization efforts will be a resounding success," Senator Bruno added.
