Bruno Praises Local Olympians as "Best in the World"
Monday, March 4, 2002
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today honored Olympic heroes from around the state -- including Saratoga County -- who participated in the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
Amy Peterson of Ballston Spa and Erin Porter of Saratoga Springs were among more than a dozen New York Olympians who participated in the Capitol ceremony, which included a visit with Governor Pataki and official commendations from the floor of the state Senate.
Both athletes participated on the U.S. Short Track Skating Olympic team.
"Amy Peterson and Erin Porter have distinguished themselves as elite individuals who are among the very best in the world at what they do," Senator Bruno said. "This past month, the worlds finest athletes gathered in Salt Lake City to contend with each other on the highest level of competition. I am incredibly proud that 18 of those athletes hail from New York State."
"New York State athletes won two gold medals, eight silvers and a bronze. They were part of what is widely considered the best American team ever fielded for the Winter Games," Senator Bruno said.
Other Olympians that were in Albany to be honored include gold medalist Jim Shea for skeleton; silver medalists Lyndsay Wall, Chris Bailey and Andrea Kilbourne, all from the womens hockey team; silver medalist Mark Grimmette from the two-man luge, and contender Adam Heidt from the mens luge.
"The hard work and commitment they have shown in achieving their Olympic dreams is admirable, and has earned these athletes the respect of their state and the entire nation," Senator Bruno said. "Amy Peterson and Erin Porter, along with their fellow Team USA members have helped to preserve the pride that America has recently rediscovered. In turn, we as Americans, are proud of Amy and Erin."
