SENATOR BRUNO HONORS PARAMEDICS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON 9/11
Meets with Widows Virginia Quinn and Cecelia Lillo
Monday, June 17, 2002
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today met with Virginia Quinn and Cecelia Lillo, widows of EMS workers from the 9-11 World Trade Center disaster. The Senate recently passed two resolutions honoring their husbands Ricardo Quinn and Carlos Lillo.
"The power of human compassion and the strength of the American spirit has been exemplified time and time again by the brave individuals who lost their lives during the unprecedented tragedy which befell our state and nation on September 11," said Senator Bruno. "The memory of both of these men will remain forever with their families, and their bravery in coming to the aid of others in the face of unknown danger will live on in the heart of every New Yorker and every American."
Currently the law does not provide for spouses of EMS workers who are members of the New York City Fire Department to receive the same death benefits as the spouses of firefighters. While the status of the EMS has been recently upgraded by the New York City Council, it is not retroactive. Last week the Senate passed legislation to allow Quinn and Lillo to receive the same benefits entitled to spouses of deceased firefighters.
