SENATOR BRUNO APPLAUDS DECISION TO CREATE PURPLE HEART STAMP

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers joined the NYS Senates successful campaign for a commemorative stamp to honor our heroes.

Senate Effort Helped Make Commemorative Stamp a Reality

Tuesday, August 20, 2002

Senator Bruno applauded todays decision by the United States Postal Service to issue a commemorative Purple Heart Stamp.

"As a veteran, I am pleased and proud that the United States Postal Service will be honoring not only the 1.8 million American veterans who were wounded in battle, but all of our veterans and military personal who sacrifice so much for our safety and freedoms," said Senator Bruno. "Senator Larkin, in particular, deserves recognition for his leadership and tireless efforts on behalf of this effort over the past two years. This honor, long overdue, is a fitting tribute to our military heroes."

The campaign for the Purple Heart stamp began in November 2000, when the Senate worked with veterans from the Military Order of the Purple Heart and other organizations to initiate a massive letter writing campaign calling for the issuance of the stamp. In the time since then, tens of thousands of letters have been sent to Dr. Virginia Noelke and the Stamp Advisory Committee.

In addition to the letter writing campaign, the Senate created a special section on their website early in 2001 to advocate for and educate the public about the fight for a Purple Heart Stamp. Thousands of letters were forwarded through the Senate website calling for the new stamp.

Designed and created by George Washington in 1782, the Badge of Military Merit was recommissioned as the Purple Heart 150 years later by General Douglas MacArthur.
