SENATOR BRUNO ANNOUNCES FUNDS TO HELP RENSSELAER COUNTY YOUTHS

Thursday, August 29, 2002

Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that the Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (CEO) in Troy will receive a grant of $205,233. The funds are awarded through the Junior Green Team Program, which is a state program designed to provide young New Yorkers between the ages of 16 to 21 with work experience in environmentally focused occupations.

"New York State is committed to youth workforce development," said Senator Bruno. "This grant will help young people of the Capital Region to gain valuable work experience-- building the foundation for intellectual growth, responsible citizenship, job opportunities, and career advancement."

The program provides tangible work experiences in environmental fields for at least six months. For the long term, the experiences gained by participants can lead to attainment of a secondary education diploma (GED), gainful employment, entrance into the military and/or enrollment in post-secondary education.

"CEO is most grateful for the opportunity to design the Junior Green Team program in Rensselaer County," said CEO Executive Director, Karen E. Gordon. "As a community action agency that looks at programs in innovative ways, this program will provide opportunities for career exploration, internships, and work experiences in environmentally related careers for our youth. As our world becomes more and more technologically driven, the Junior Green Program will give young people the experience to learn about the natural world that influences our daily lives here in the Northeast and how interdependent we are with our environment."
