Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) has announced that Victoria DeVantier of Lewiston has been selected as a 2001 New York State "Woman of Distinction."
DeVantier will be honored June 5 at an Albany reception, where her photograph and biography will be displayed in a special public exhibit at the Legislative Office Building.
"I am proud to honor Victoria as a Woman of Distinction and prouder still of the recognition she has earned from her neighbors, colleagues and friends for her achievements on behalf of our community," said Senator Maziarz.
"Victoria is an individual who has selflessly donated her time and considerable talents for the benefit of her community for several years. The consummate volunteer, Victoria never hesitates to lend a hand whenever and wherever help is needed," Maziarz said.
While her range of activity is diverse, Victoria has a special fondness for children, especially those with special challenges. In addition to her work as a school monitor specializing in inclusion supervision at Lewiston-Porter South Elementary School, Victoria was an ice skating instructor with the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped (SABAH) for 5 years until an on-ice injury limited her activity. She is also recognized for her work with the Special Olympics; the National Down Syndrome Society's Buddy Walk of Niagara; and the Variety Club of Children's Hospital in Buffalo, New York.
Though it may seem her schedule is at capacity, Victoria finds time to serve as a member of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life committee and a volunteer for the Niagara Falls Festival of Lights. She is also active with the St. Francis Guild of Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston and Messiah Lutheran Church's Lutheran Church Women (LCW) group.
Victoria and her husband, Edward, reside in Lewiston. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Christina and Nicole.
The Senate's Woman of Distinction program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
