The New York State Senate today honored the owners, breeders, jockey and trainers of Kentucky Derby Champion Funny Cide at the State Capitol Building with a resolution recognizing their efforts and accomplishments.
"The year's Kentucky Derby was a wake up call to the racing world that Funny Cide is a true champion, and that New York Breeding and Racing is the finest in the world," said Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno. "Congratulations to the entire Funny Cide Team, and thank you for bringing a tremendous sense of pride and excitement to the Empire State."
Funny Cide became the first New York Bred ever to win the Kentucky Derby and the first gelding to win since 1929. Funny Cide's time of 2:01.19 was the tenth fastest time in Kentucky Derby history.
Ridden by New York-based jockey Jose Santos and trained by New York based trainer Barclay Tagg, Funny Cide was foaled at Saratoga Thoroughbred Farm and is owned by Sackatoga Stables, a group of New York investors whose managing partner is Saratoga Springs resident Jack Knowlton.
