Senator Bruno and the New York State Senate recently honored the owners, breeders, jockey and trainers of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes Champion Funny Cide at the State Capitol Building with a Senate Resolution and a reception to recognize their efforts and accomplishments.
"The Funny Cide story is a great example of the American Dream and everyone was happy to come along for a great ride. In five short weeks, Funny Cide went from Saratoga's horse to New York's horse to become America's horse," said Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno. "Congratulations to the entire Funny Cide Team, and thank you for bringing a tremendous sense of pride and excitement to the Empire State."
Funny Cide became the first New York Bred ever to win the Kentucky Derby and the first gelding to win since 1929. Funny Cide's time of 2:01.19 was the tenth fastest time in Kentucky Derby history.
Funny Cide went on to capture the second leg of horse racing's prestigious Triple Crown, The Preakness Stakes, in dramatic fashion. Funny Cide finished with a time of 1:55:61, only two seconds shy of the Stakes record and the third fastest time in Preakness history, becoming one of only 28 horses to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
Although Funny Cide fell just short of winning the Belmont Stakes and taking the Triple Crown, his courage and determination captured the hearts of the nation and inspired a new generation of horse-racing fans.
Ridden by New York based jockey Jose Santos and trained by New York based trainer Barclay Tagg, Funny Cide was foaled at Saratoga Thoroughbred Farm and is owned by Sackatoga Stables, a group of New York investors whose managing partner is Saratoga Springs resident Jack Knowlton.
