"Join the Fight!" Online Petition Available Through Web Site

Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced the creation of an online petition as a way for constituents to show their support for a "Do Not Spam" registry to reduce unwanted e-mail. Senator Brunos "Join the Fight" online petition can be accessed through his web site, www.senatorbruno.com.
"Much like the unsolicited telephone calls from telemarketers which were out of control not so long ago, unwanted e-mails confront each and every one of us who uses e-mail as a way to communicate," Senator Bruno said. "My Senate colleagues and I have approved the creation of the Do Not Spam registry to fight back against unwanted e-mails, and we hope the Assembly will consider this important piece of legislation."
The Senate-approved "Do Not Spam" legislation mirrors New Yorks highly-successful "Do Not Call" registry, which has virtually put an end to unwanted telemarketing calls. New Yorks first-in-the-nation registry has prevented at least a half billion sales calls and has served as a model for the recently created national "Do Not Call" registry.
However, in order for the "Do Not Spam" registry to become a reality, the State Assembly must address this issue. Senator Brunos online petition was designed to allow constituents to get involved with the legislative process and show that the issue of unwanted e-mail needs to be addressed.
"The people of this state should have the choice to stop unwanted e-mails, and the creation of a Do Not Spam registry would be a step in the right direction," Senator Bruno said. "I hope concerned constituents will take the time to share their support and join the fight against spam."
