Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that over 10,500 people from across New York State participated in surveys at state and county fairs to voice their opinions on issues ranging from the new state smoking ban, tax policies, spam/e-mail and criminal justice measures.
"Every year at fairs across our state, the Senate reaches out for direct public opinion by surveying New Yorkers on timely issues facing people in their everyday lives," said Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno. "I am pleased with the tremendous amount of people who took time out of their day at the fair to give us their opinion by participating in our survey. The results provide us with great feedback and direction to help us address important issues in the future."
A majority of people expressed support for the new statewide smoking ban (55% to 45%), a law that took effect in July.
Respondents overwhelmingly supported a Senate initiative patterned after the States successful telemarketer "Do Not Call" list to create a registry to ban "spam" email (86%). Fairgoers showed strong support for a proposal to allow localities to assess property taxes on land owned by nonprofit organizations when the property is not being used for the organizations core mission (72%).
On two criminal justice related questions fairgoers strongly believed that New York State needs to do more to protect children from sexual predators on the Internet (85%) and crackdown on repeat DWI offenders (76%). Fairgoers were closely split when asked if they supported paying higher state taxes to maintain education and prevent local tax increases (49% to 51%).
The poll of more than 10,500 fairgoers included 5,500 respondents from the New York State Fair in Syracuse and over 5,000 respondents at local fairs, including the Monroe County, Ulster County, Delaware County, Sullivan County, Washington County and Schaghticoke Fairs.
