Thursday, September 18, 2003
Senator Joseph L. Bruno today announced that Michael Hughes of Mechanicville and Filicia Brown of Wynantskill have been selected to participate in the Senates first annual "Mentors Matter" program for Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties.
"With every child we have an opportunity to mold a future," said Senator Bruno. "These two students are without-a-doubt tomorrows leaders. Filicia and Michael are remarkable young adults, they both have amazing potential and I will encourage them to make the right choices in their futures."
Hughes and Brown have been selected from a group of more than 20 local applicants to have the opportunity to shadow the Majority Leader through December. The students will spend time with Senator Bruno learning about the State Senate as well as their local communities and are expected to complete a total of 26 hours in the program which will commence in December.
"Its important to provide our youth with positive life experiences," said Senator Bruno. "I hope to offer these two students unique experiences here at the Capitol, ones that will build character and bring them a wealth of knowledge in areas like government, politics, leadership and community involvement."
Michael Hughes is a sixteen year old history enthusiast and a 10th grader at Stillwater Central High School. Filicia Brown is a fourteen year old, 9th grader at Troy High School who has aspirations of becoming a politician.
"Mentors Matter" is a new Senate initiative developed from principles set forth in Colin Powells national mentoring campaign, Americas Promise, as well as in response to President Bushs 2003 State of the Union address where he proposed an initiative to bring mentors to more than one million disadvantaged youth.
