Senator Joseph L. Bruno wanted to announce as a reminder that October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women," said Senator Bruno. "The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better. I urge women to take the appropriate early detection measures to protect their health.
"The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown, therefore prevention is difficult. Early detection is often the key to surviving this disease. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat, and ultimately, conquer. The American Cancer Society encourages women to get examined by their physician yearly, a mammogram done annually, and to conduct monthly self examinations.
"I believe that educating women on the risks, as well as the preventative measures they should take is integral to saving lives. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month assists in reminding, and alerting everyone to the dangers of this disease. I hope that with increased awareness and knowledge, women will be more equipped to overcome this dangerous threat."
In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes. Approximately 212,600 women will be diagnosed in 2003, out of those women nearly 40,000 will die from the disease.
