Statewide Contest Promotes Environmental Awareness
Thursday, February 5, 2004
Senator Joseph L. Bruno today called for local student entries from the 43rd Senate District for the 13th annual I*MA*GREEN*NATION celebration, a statewide competition that encourages student awareness of environmental issues.
The Senate-sponsored I*MA*GREEN*NATION celebration was established to develop awareness of environmental concerns and promote recycling and conservation. The competition is open to students in grades one through eight, and includes an awards presentation at the State Capitol on May 11, 2004. Winners will be presented with medals and participants will have an opportunity to view submissions by their fellow students and tour the seat of State Government.
"This competition encourages students to think creatively and determine unique solutions to the environmental issues that face their communities," said Senator Bruno. "When students take an active interest in their environment, they will learn how they can help make New York a cleaner, healthier place to live."
Last year, more than 500 projects were submitted that explored issues related to recycling, solid waste and conservation. More than 1,000 students and their teachers traveled from across the state to the Capitol to participate in competition events. Participants from local schools included 9 students from Tamarac Middle School, 22 students from Red Mill Elementary School, 10 students from Rensselaer Middle School, and 18 students from Goff Middle School.
From the 43rd Senate District, Mr. Ford's and Mr. Crall's Goff Middle School class won first place for Division III in the Audio/Video category and Ms. Pilato's Rensselaer Middle School class won third place for Division III in the Audio/Video category.
Schools wishing to participate in this years event must register by February 20 and entries are due March 26. All participants' entries are displayed for the event. For registration forms and additional information, schools may contact Senator Brunos office at 518-455-3191.
