Tuesday, May 25, 2004
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today joined the New York State Senate in honoring Seth Bove from Troy with an Achievers Award at the 24th Annual Disabilities Awareness Day Awards Ceremony. The prestigious event recognizes an individuals ability to overcome personal, physical challenges and honors their accomplishments on behalf of themselves and their community.
"The Achievers Award is an honor that recognizes the triumph of individuals over sometimes daunting physical challenges, and it is bestowed on those whose efforts serve as an example of courage, personal excellence and achievement for our entire community," said Senator Bruno. "I am especially pleased to honor Seth Bove for the tremendous example he provides in breaking barriers and overcoming obstacles. His achievements should be a source of pride and inspiration to all of us."
When Seth Bove was seven years old, he was in a car accident that left him a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury. His injuries were so profound that he spent much of his childhood and early teens either in the hospital or home recovering from surgeries or medical procedures. Mr. Boves desire for independence has helped him to succeed in the face of adversity.
Mr. Bove attended Tamarac High School where despite sometimes lengthy absences, he was a high honor student and gifted guitar player. This month, Mr. Bove graduated from Siena College, where he lived on campus and was a solid B+ student.
This Fall, Mr. Bove will be attending San Diego State University where he will be working towards his Masters in Rehab Counseling. When he is finished, he will spend his professional career helping others overcome their own obstacles.
Mr. Bove serves as an example of unwavering determination. Despite the setbacks he has been dealt, he never stopped pursuing his goals -- making the honor roll, graduating college, and making a difference in the lives of others.
Mr. Bove was presented with an "Achievers Award" certificate and a Senate Proclamation that highlights his accomplishments at the special ceremony in the "Well" of the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
The New York State Senate "Achievers Award" is presented each spring in conjunction with Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day, an annual event sponsored by the Senate to raise public consciousness of the efforts and accomplishments of citizens with physical disabilities.
