Averill Park's Desiree M. Croteau Receives Recognition
Wednesday, June 9, 2004
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today honored Averill Parks Desiree M. Croteau as the Woman of Distinction for the 43rd Senate District at the 7th Annual Senate Woman of Distinction ceremony, honoring women for their contributions enriching the quality of life in their communities and beyond. Ms. Croteau lost her eyesight at the age of 43, and nine years later, in May 2004 she earned her Master of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
"Ms. Croteaus positive attitude and motivation truly represent the essence of the "Women of Distinction Program," said Senator Bruno. "Her hard work and dedication to her educational goals as well as advocating for the disabled community set an exemplary model for all New Yorkers."
"She lost sight from her eyes, but never lost sight of her goals. Ms. Croteaus couragous spirit in the face of adversity is an inspiration to all who know her," said Senator Bruno. "I am extremely honored to have this woman representing our community."
Desiree Croteau recently completed a five-year term as Chair of the Employment and Technology Committee of the NYS Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicappeds State Rehabilitation Council. The Council makes recommendations to state leaders and private employers on mechanisms to increase employment opportunities for the blind and visually impaired.
Ms. Croteau attributes her academic achievement to her loss of sight: "My blindness is the reason I am excelling." Her next goal is a Ph.D. in management operations. She is focusing on innovation in radio broadcasting, tapping into her experience as former chief financial officer of Albany Broadcasting Company.
