Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno today announced that the Board of Directors of the Governor's Office for Small Cities has approved $400,000 in funding for the construction of a new Senior Community Center in Grafton.
"Senior citizen residents make up over twenty percent of the population in Grafton," said Senator Bruno. "The need for a Senior Center has been a top priority of the town for a long while and I am extremely thankful to the Governor's Office of Small Cities for approving these funds so that the seniors in Grafton, as well as those in surrounding communities, will be able to enjoy the benefits the center has to offer."
"I'm elated at this news, and I'd like to thank Senator Bruno and the Governor's office for all they've done to secure these funds for the Town of Grafton," said Tyler Sawyer, Town Supervisor of Grafton. "Several people within the town, county and state have worked together to make this project work. The Senior Center is long overdue and it will be a great addition for the senior citizens of Rensselaer County."
The Town of Grafton has proposed to use the donation of a private residence for the construction of the new Senior Community Center. The total cost of the project will be $631,732, with the New York State Small Cities Program providing $400,000. The Small Cities Program is a federally funded program that provides community development grants to towns, villages and cities with a population under 50,000 and to counties with an unincorporated population under 200,000.
The proposed Senior Community Center will benefit 389 seniors residing in the Town of Grafton, as well as over 7,200 seniors in neighboring communities.
