"It has been four years since the minimum wage was last increased in New York State, and since then 12 other states and the District of Columbia have raised their minimum wage above $5.15.
After much discussion and careful consideration, I believe this is the time to act to ensure that the minimum wage increases on January 1, 2005, as called for in the bill originally passed by the Senate in July. As I said earlier, I expected the increase to go forward and, absent any action by the Federal Government or further discussions here, the override is only option left to put a minimum wage increase into law.
The increase will help the working families at the lowest income levels make ends meet, without putting an undue burden on small businesses and the economy, while it helps the working poor realize the value and dignity of hard work."
