HELPFUL INFORMATION ON NY's "DO NOT CALL" REGISTRY
As your state Senator, I have worked hard on issues affecting your right to privacy. That is why I was pleased to sponsor the law that created New York's "Do Not Call" registry. Governor Pataki signed my bill into law in 2000.
Once your name is entered into the registry, most telemarketers will be prohibited from calling your home. There are some exemptions and other things you need to understand about the law. The following information should answer the most common questions about the registry. It also contains information about what to do if those annoying calls don't stop.
New York's "Do Not Call" law is good news for all of us who want to enjoy more quiet time with family. Please be assured that I will continue to monitor this important law to make sure it's working as planned.
Sincerely,
Joseph L. Bruno
State Senator

THE "DO NOT CALL" REGISTRY
The "Do Not Call" registry helps stop unwanted sales calls to your home. This free service is administered by the New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB).
Depending on when you enrolled, telemarketers have from 30 to 120 days to remove your name from their calling lists. Your enrollment is valid for three years, and you will receive a re-registration reminder at that time.
THERE ARE EXEMPTIONS
The "Do Not Call" registry will stop most telemarketer calls to your home, but not all. There are exemptions. Some groups and companies can continue to call you even after you have signed onto the registry, including:
* charitable organizations;
* religious corporations;
* political parties and committees;
* companies with which you are already doing business, and
* companies seeking a face-to-face meeting before concluding a sales transaction.
VIOLATIONS
Others that continue to call after your enrollment may be in violation of the law and face fines of up to $2,000. The Consumer Protection Board is responsible for enforcing the law.
FILING A COMPLAINT
To file a formal complaint against telemarketers you believe have violated the law, you must obtain a "Do Not Call Complaint Form" from the CPB by clicking here or calling the PCB's Consumer Complaint line at 1-800-697-1220.
You will be asked for as much of the following information as you can provide:
* Date and time of the call;
* phone number of the caller (from your caller ID, or ask for it);
* name of the company and the product or service being offered;
* name and address of the telemarketing firm and the manager's name;
* your name and address.
