NEW MENTORS MATTER PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS
Dear Friend, Mentoring has proven to be a positive experience for young people who meet challenging situations. Students whom have benefited from relationships with responsible adults are less likely to become involved in destructive activities such as drugs, alcohol, and violence. Mentors have come to serve as role models to help young people build confidence, gain knowledge, and develop character, which is exactly what I am looking to do in our community. My office is soliciting nominations for students between the ages of 12 and 16 who may be struggling in school or at home and need a little extra direction. The students will participate as mentorees in my office and at events within the community one hour each week for six months. The program will begin in July and extend through the end of December, and will be an opportunity for students to learn about leadership, government, politics and their community. Students chosen for this program will undoubtedly benefit from the unique experience. Upon completion of the 26-hour program, students will be invited to a special ceremony next January at the Capitol in Albany, where they will be honored with a certificate of appreciation. Student nomination forms (below) should be sent to my district office to the attention of: In becoming a mentor I hope to put aspirations in young hearts, to instill values, goals and skills, and to provide a positive experience to guide our youth in making the right choices for their future. I look forward to meeting the student nominees for the first ever NYS Senate "Mentors Matter" program and to working with them individually later this year. Sincerely, Joseph L. Bruno State Senator Joseph L. Bruno
I want to ensure that young people in the Capital Region achieve their full potential. To realize that goal, I am pleased to introduce a new program to our community called Mentors Matter. This New York State Senate initiative will offer young adults guidance, encouragement, and extra direction as they face the uncertainties of the future.
